Safe Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals
A bill entitled “An Act for a Healthy Massachusetts: Safer Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals” (H-783 & S558) has been introduced in the Legislature. This bill seeks to protect our health from ten of the most dangerous toxic chemicals, establish an innovative approach to regulation that focuses on solutions, and position Massachusetts industry to be competitive in the new green economy.
It is in all of our interests to have and use, in our homes, public spaces, and workplaces, safe products that have been produced safely. For a long time, in making business decisions, we have acted as if we do business in a different world from the one in which we live, work, eat, drink, and breathe. The consequences of this shortsightedness are coming home to roost. The costs of diseases produced by toxic materials are now externalized to individuals and society, including health care costs and special education costs. Taxpayers bear these costs in all kinds of hidden ways. Children are the most vulnerable among us to toxic chemicals, so reducing toxic chemical exposure is really a way to protect our children and our future.
We need to learn to do business differently, and we can. This bill helps us get there by providing for alternatives assessments, some of which are already underway at the Toxic Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell. (See http://www.turi.org .) Alternatives assessments open the door to innovation and new opportunities. When talking about renewable energy technology, Governor Patrick is fond of saying, “If we get this right, the whole world will be our customer.” This is equally true for safe alternatives to toxic chemicals.
