Safe Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals

Coordinator: M.B. of Worcester

A bill entitled “An Act for a Healthy Massachusetts: Safer Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals” (H-783 & S558) has been introduced in the Legislature. This bill seeks to protect our health from ten of the most dangerous toxic chemicals, establish an innovative approach to regulation that focuses on solutions, and position Massachusetts industry to be competitive in the new green economy.

It is in all of our interests to have and use, in our homes, public spaces, and workplaces, safe products that have been produced safely. For a long time, in making business decisions, we have acted as if we do business in a different world from the one in which we live, work, eat, drink, and breathe. The consequences of this shortsightedness are coming home to roost. The costs of diseases produced by toxic materials are now externalized to individuals and society, including health care costs and special education costs. Taxpayers bear these costs in all kinds of hidden ways. Children are the most vulnerable among us to toxic chemicals, so reducing toxic chemical exposure is really a way to protect our children and our future.

We need to learn to do business differently, and we can. This bill helps us get there by providing for alternatives assessments, some of which are already underway at the Toxic Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell. (See http://www.turi.org .) Alternatives assessments open the door to innovation and new opportunities. When talking about renewable energy technology, Governor Patrick is fond of saying, “If we get this right, the whole world will be our customer.” This is equally true for safe alternatives to toxic chemicals.

Please join me in supporting this legislation. More information about the bill and how you can help it to become law is available at http://www.healthytomorrow.org/currentleg.html

Yes! People don't realize just how dangerous some of these chemicals are! The cost of using these chemicals often falls on ALL of us as taxpayers, when we have to clean up the water so we can drink it, when we have to keep our children out of favorite ponds and streams due to BACKYARD pollutants, when we have to keep our children off of our own lawns, and the chemical companies lie about just how long that stuff stays on your lawn, so even when you do go on it, it's not even safe...

The time has come to take major steps to protect the health of Massachusetts citizens, by using safer alternatives to toxic chemicals. I urge Gov. Patrick to fully support this important legislation.

ABSOLUTELY!!! I'm so glad to see that others are aware of the issues associated with toxic chemicals. I myself have recently formed allergies to toxic chemicals. I myself have accumulated so many household cleaners over the years that I don't know what to do with them. I don't want to throw them away as that is bad for the environment. California has a tar pit. Could one be created here for disposal? What would it take to get one started? Just an idea... Though I have no experience in this, I do have project managemnt experience in my background. Maybe we could bond people together to get a solution in place?

Yes. As a parent of two small children and as a woman, I am concerned about the environmental causes of breast cancer and childhood asthma. We should not have to go in search of cleansers and products without harmful chemicals at Whole Foods. They should be more readily available. My husband, David Roush, also a great supporter of yours, agrees with this.

Is there a link between toxic chemicals and high cancer rates? Of course. We need to find ways to remove these chemicals from regular use. The costs of continuing down the current path of usage are far too high.

No question, toxic chemicals should not be in our cosmetics, food, or any other product we use or take into our bodies

Regardless of our financial stake in any endeavor, we all breathe the same air, drink the same water, eat food grown in the same earth. We all need to be healthy, and to insure the health of our children and of the earth. we need to start thinking long range, of the effect of our actions on the 7th generation from ours.

It would be great if we could make nontoxic products the norm rather than the exception.

We need to protect our health and that of the planet by switching to safer, less toxic products. Toxic chemicals affect our personal health and the health of the earth and the water. We can be a leader in this and become an example for the rest of the country to follow!

For better or worse, we are all connected; with respect to toxic chemicals it's the worst. As a society, we know better and should do better for ourselves and others.

Please pay attention to this, for our children's sake. We cannot continue to poison ourselves and then ask why the cancer rates are rising.

I look forward to a day when people realize that the risks of breathing other people's laundry products are not so unlike breathing second-hand smoke; and a day when people realize that when the word "scented" appears on a label, it frequently equals toxic.... What if we didn't have to walk through a neighborhood on a gorgeous summer day, and smell other people's chemical laundry smells when there are trees and grass and flowers to smell....

I believe the study of commonly used toxins is a critical matter, and one that is not yet fully understood. An article in today's Boston Globe, for example, points to the hidden dangers in ubiquitous plastic bottles. I myself only use stainless steel or glass for drinking and cooking, and I am far out of the mainstream on this. We need more public awareness on the dangers of common toxins and safer, more natural alternatives (which are readily available at cheaper costs, i.e. at Trader Joe's, off the internet, etc.).

Thank you for supporting safer alternatives to toxic chemicals. Your support will save lives today by protecting folks who come in contact with these substances, and tomorrow by keeping our air, rivers and streams cleaner.
