Unemployment in Massachusetts Continues to Improve

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts improved for the month of June, falling from 9.2% to 9.0%, as the Commonwealth continues to make a stronger and faster recovery from the economic crisis than the rest of the nation.

  • June marks the sixth straight month of job growth in Massachusetts with a total of 44,700 jobs added since December and 3,400 private sector jobs created last month alone.
  • At 9.0%, Massachusetts unemployment rate remains substantially below the 9.5% national average. But Governor Patrick recognizes that there are still people looking for work, and he will keep pushing forward to create new jobs.
  • A number of key sectors are seeing encouraging signs, including leisure and hospitality, construction, and trade, transportation and utilities.
  • For the tens of thousands of our neighbors who have seen their benefits expire, the Governor will continue to lobby members of our congressional delegation for an end to the Republican filibuster that is blocking a federal extension of unemployment benefits.
  • Charlie Baker wants to eliminate unemployment benefits for 12,000 Massachusetts workers under his business climate proposal. This is not the time to be stripping benefits from our citizens who rely on this support to pay their bills and put food on the table.
