Partnering with Communities to Create Jobs

Governor Patrick was in Hopkinton this morning to announce a $2.5 million grant, awarded to the community for local infrastructure upgrades. The grant, funded through the Massachusetts Opportunity Relocation and Expansion (MORE) Jobs Capital program, is an example of the Governor's continued push to create jobs and spur long-term economic development throughout the Commonwealth. Today's announcement was a part of Governor Patrick's tour of several life sciences companies in Hopkinton.

  • The Hopkinton project is projected to create more than 100 new jobs through the expansion of the Hopkinton-based life sciences company, Lonza Biologics. The expansion upgrades sewer capacity with the neighboring town of Milford, and makes essential improvements to the local wastewater treatment plant.
  • This past summer, Governor Patrick signed his groundbreaking Life Sciences Initiative into law, enhancing the state's status as a global leader in life sciences. The 10-year, $1 billion plan unites research hospitals, public and private colleges and universities, and businesses in support of the Commonwealth's nationally recognized strengths in medicine and science. To date, the initiative has helped to create more than 6,400 projected jobs.
  • The MORE Jobs Program, which has funded 28 projects across the state, allows the Patrick-Murray Administration to partner with cities and towns in support of economic growth. The Governor's smart investment in Hopkinton, together with similar investments in other communities across Massachusetts, improves our public infrastructure and creates the conditions for business expansion and job growth that will carry us into economic recovery.
  • Thanks to Governor Patrick's leadership, Massachusetts is poised to come out of the recession faster than the rest of the nation. A recent survey concluded that 20 percent of Greater Boston employers expect to increase hiring in the coming months. Click here to read today's Boston Globe article.
